Shen Weimin, deputy director of Shanghai Municipal Quality Supervision Bureau, revealed that after investigation, it was not found that the only enterprise in Shanghai that produces food silica gel pad uses non-food silica gel raw materials to produce food silica gel pad. The production of silicone rubber products for food shall conform to the Hygienic Standard for Rubber Products for Food (GB 4806.1-94). However, the standard does not limit the scope and temperature of use of silicone rubber products for food, nor does it specify the period of use of silicone rubber pads for food. The Municipal Quality Supervision Bureau has organized experts to evaluate whether there is a safety risk when using silicone pads repeatedly under high temperature when steaming steamed buns.
The evaluation conclusions are as follows: First, according to the relevant scientific literature, the silica gel products for food contact in accordance with the relevant national standards can be reused in the temperature range of -40℃ to 180℃; Second, when the food silicone pad is reused, its appearance or physical properties are found to change, such as swelling, discoloration, sticky surface, increased hardness, reduced elasticity, etc., which should be replaced in time.
At the same time, Shanghai Municipal Quality supervision Bureau also organized the investigation of 60 enterprises that may be involved in the production of rubber products for food, including 5 enterprises that produce rubber products for food. After 8 batches of products were selected on the spot for inspection, it was found that they all meet the requirements of the "Health Standard for Rubber products for Food" (GB 4806.1-94).
